Has this Ohio duo ever made a platter this fine?
OK, Rubber Factory is right in there, but after more than a decade in the game, The Black Keys stop the excursions into other genres and get back to what they do best: Big, ballsy blues.
2008's Attack & Release, with Danger Mouse at the mixing board, never quite delivered the way that it should've and the Blakroc experiment was hit or miss.
The Keys have their own antidote here. "Everlasting Light" burns brightly and Grammy-nominated lead single "Tighten Up" has swagger.
What Brothers discovers is a tunefulness the duo hasn't displayed before. When they were content to shake, rattle and roll before, their songs stick here.
If you're sitting around and waiting for another White Stripes record that may never come, this could be the antidote to your blues-missing blues.
P.S. Buying the CD is worth it in this case. The disc is made with a heat-sensitive material that turns the platter from black on insertion to white with lettering after listening. A neat trick that you can't appreciate if you DL from iTunes.
