With his long-awaited, massive The Archives Vol. 1 1963-1972 box set due June 2 — really, Neil, please don't kid us this time — Fork becomes a stopgap in new material from the Canadian songwriter.
Fork was inspired by Young's 1959 Lincoln Continental which was converted to run on hybrid techology. He plans to drive it to Washington, D.C., from his Bay Area home as an example to lawmakers. The project is the subject of an in-process documentary named "Linc/Volt."
Though the name might suggest a decision to go in separate direction, without having heard a note, I have a hard time believing that Young has decided to burn out instead of fade away. He's been playing it mellow for the last few records, as the underappreciated Prairie Wind demonstrated.
Fork is his 31st studio album for Reprise.
