STEVE KAYS' GHOSTWRITING PHENOMENON
Steve Kays, what are you doing? What is going on with what I'll call Letter-gate? What exactly do you know about these letters to the editor and when did you know it?
If you're out of the loop, the Vacaville Reporter reported that a couple of letters to the editor supporting his campaign were signed by people who didn't write them. They'd evidently signed a petition in Kays' place of business and their names ended up on the letters in what Kays described to the Daily Republic as a "miscommunication."
Linda Sussman, who runs a business out of the building Steve Kays owns, signed a petition agreeing that candidates shouldn't receive large campaign contributions. The next thing she knows a letter to the editor is sent to the Vacaville paper with her name attached to it.
Another letter endorsing Kays was signed by the father of Kays' building manager. Only he didn't write the letter.
Kays says the letters were written by his campaign committee.
He told the Vaca paper, "Maybe they were not told
precisely about the newspaper, but my secretary told them. She was supposed to have told them of that."
Huh? This isn't just doublespeak. It's triplespeak. The pathetic thing is that letter writing campaigns are part of any political campaign. But usually you can find supporters who are willing to sit down on their own and actually compose letters supporting the candidate.
What's with the apparent deception in this case? It can't be that difficult to locate an actual Steve Kays supporter who can put pen to paper, is it? I mean, Kays almost landed on the Council last time out. I'm sure some of those supporters could string a few sentences on their own together about their candidate.
The problem is from now until the election, every time someone sees a letter to the editor endorsing Kays', the authorship will be suspect. An eager supporter wanting to share their endorsement of a City Council candidate or a self-endorsing creative writing exercise from Kays' campaign committee?
No, problem is Steven Kays' tendency for braggadocio. See what he has to say about himself at two of his many websites:
