This Week, Nick Would Buy ... #48
The British rockers had been on the bench for nearly a year before this, one of the last live performances by Keith Moon.
This DVD/Blu-ray captures The Who just before the release of "Who Are You," the group's final record with the late drummer.
Regarded as one of the greatest live acts of all time, The Who is captured at two distinctly different periods in the group's development. While top billing is the PBS feature, Live at Kilburn, which was a performance shot for The Kids Are Alright, a documentary by Jeff Stein. The video also includes the band's 1969 performance at the London Coliseum, which was the first live performance of the Tommy material.
Still, the end of the Kilburn footage reputably a shaky show amongst the most devout in Whoville due to the layoff, but desired nonetheless after the Kids doc has to be a barnburner, a closing run which strings together "My Generation," "Join Together," "Who Are You?" and "Won't Get Fooled Again." Thinking of Pete Townsend notching his signature helicopter swipe across the ax has to be one of the most essential images in rock 'n' roll history. No wonder this performance has been sought for 30-plus years.
If I Were Really Rich ...
The Black Keys, Live at the Crystal Ballroom (Nonesuch) | DVD from Ohio drums and bass combo includes material from this spring's Danger Mouse-produced Attack & Release.
David Cook, David Cook (RCA/19) | If he's serious about making something a little heavier than that forced "American Idol" nonsense, I guess willing try taking him seriously.
Phish, At the Roxy (Jemp) | Eight-disc set spanning the band's three-night stint at the Atlanta theater in 1993. Probably only for the devoted, but the intrigue is piqued a touch by the impending reunion in March '09.
Third Eye Blind, Red Star (Sony) | Digital-only EP from San Francisco power-pop rockers is first tease of long-incubating Ursa Major due next year.
